CBRS stands for Citizens Broadband Radio Service. It is a 150 MHz wide broadcast band of the 3.5 GHz band. CBRS is built for large-scale industrial and commercial use, addressing the limitations of WiFi. A private LTE network can operate on the CBRS spectrum. This solution is an improved method of providing WiFi with better coverage & throughput, higher levels of security resulting in less access points. Traditionally reserved for the U.S. military and fixed satellite service, this spectrum is now available on a shared-access basis using a three-tiered model.
- Tier 1: Incumbents
- Tier 2: Priority Access Licenses (PALs)
- Tier 3: General Authorized Access (GAA)
The incumbent users primarily consist of the U.S. Navy and satellite ground stations. These users are protected from interference from Tier 2 and Tier 3 users. The PALs have priority over GAA and generally consists of internet service providers and enterprises with licenses. The GAA tier can use any spectrum not used by the first two tiers. GAA users include IoT devices, smartphones, and CBRS gateway devices.
CBRS is a desirable solution because any organization has the ability to access the spectrum and deploy an LTE network. PierCon Solutions can help find and implement the best private wireless solution for your industry.
